The questions people actually ask
I'm Sophie Seddon, an NCTJ-qualified journalist and strategic PR, media relations and communications consultant with over 20 years' experience helping clients find clarity. For most of my career I was the one asking the questions. It seems only fair to answer a few of my own.

A career in journalism teaches you that the right question opens everything up. So rather than a corporate biography, here are the honest answers to what people most often want to know.
Question 01
What do people actually come to you for?
Rarely “more content”. Most of the people who come to me aren’t looking for more words. They’re looking for something harder to put a finger on. Often, they just need space to think properly with someone who can help them make sense of it.
Clarity
When everything feels tangled.
Confidence
In what they’re saying publicly.
Calm support
When the stakes feel high.
Messaging that fits
That reflects who they are.
Question 02
Who do you usually work with?
The people who choose to work with me are usually founders wearing too many hats. Leadership teams trying to align on what they stand for. Organisations navigating scrutiny, change or growth, where communication has suddenly started to feel heavy. What connects them is a need for strategic PR and communications support that is both structured and clear, especially when things are complex, regulated or visible.
Question 03
What does working with you actually involve?
It depends what you need. Often it means getting clear on what you want to say before you go public, shaping messaging that holds up to scrutiny, managing media relations with confidence and care, and turning complexity into simple, usable language. My approach combines journalism, strategic communications and project leadership, but what clients usually notice first is this:
What clients notice first: things start to feel clearer. Decisions get easier. Messaging stops feeling like a guessing game.
Four things I help you do
Good communication doesn't start with writing. It starts with understanding.
01
Untangle what you’re trying to say.
02
Ask the questions that bring clarity.
03
Turn complexity into language people understand.
04
Make sure that what you put out into the world feels like you. Just clearer, sharper and more confident.
Question 04
What are you actually like to work with?
Steady, I’m told. I won’t overcomplicate things, I won’t panic, and I won’t add confusion to an already chaotic situation. People often tell me they feel comfortable quickly. That they can talk freely. That things feel clearer after a conversation. That matters, because the understanding always comes before the writing.
Question 05
Can I trust you with something sensitive?
Yes. It’s where a lot of my experience sits. Alongside journalism, I’ve held senior media relations roles advising at command-team level through high-pressure, reputationally sensitive situations. I understand how communication behaves under pressure, and how trust is built over time.
Question 06
Why do most people get in touch?
Most clients don’t come to me because everything is going wrong. They come because they don’t want it to. Or because they know what they say matters, and they want to get it right.
My job is to make sure what you put out into the world feels like you. Just clearer, sharper and more confident.
Good communication doesn't start with writing. It starts with understanding.
The short birography
Helping ideas, and people, grow
A lot of the work I do connects back to something quite simple: helping people make sense of their own story. Growing up in leafy Cheshire, I spent a lot of time making up stories and noticing people. That curiosity never left me.
Now, in Honley, Holmfirth, I help businesses find the words for what they already know, but haven't been able to say yet. Through strategic PR, communications consultancy, mentoring and long-term partnerships, I help clients get to a place where their message feels clear, confident and true to them. So they can be seen, heard, understood and taken seriously for what they do best.
